It’s funny what you see through the lens of a camera. I love the way the world looks through the lens. I hate the way I look through the lens.
Strange how I don’t see all these things in the mirror, but I notice in pictures. I notice how my eyes are too big and often droopy. I notice my tiny frame and frail structure. I see the curve in my spine. I see the lines in my face. I see the dark of my eyelids. I don’t notice these things in the mirror but put me in front of that lens.
I realize almost everyone dislikes the way they look in pictures. I’ve only ever met a few people who love having their picture taken. Most people won’t argue too much about it, but seldom do they love the camera being pointed in their direction.
Though the lens doesn’t do me any favors, there is so much beauty to be found through it as well. Magical things appear through the lens. Little nuances one often doesn’t notice until one sees the picture later on.
Moments in time are captured through the lens. Moments of joy, pain, laughter, sorrow, anger, silliness, and more. Moments, that once passed will never be there again.
So even though, there are moments when I don’t like what the lens does to me, I still enjoy capturing life through the lens. Capturing moments that someday I will look back on fondly and smile. Moments captured that I cannot get back but I can cherish and smile at always because I saw them through the lens.
