A Challenge in Kindness

Tell us about the nicest thing you’ve ever done.
Inspired by The Daily Prompt

kindness

I don’t know if I even know the answer to this. I can think of many acts of kindness or nice things I’ve done, but I don’t know what the “nicest” would be. Honestly how can any of us know how our kindnesses might affect the day or life of another. Something as small as a smile or a compliment can change someone’s day and sometimes the larger gestures go unnoticed or with less impact.

Maybe the nicest thing I have ever done was taking in people to live in my home when they very much needed a place to stay. Maybe it was traveling 1100 miles across the country and changing all our plans to help a friend I had met online who had nobody else to help. Maybe it was buying food for the man holding the sign “Will Work for Food”, even though I had no work to offer him. Maybe it was one of those bigger things, or maybe it was giving a ride to the mother with a broken stroller or dropping the last of my change in a donation bucket outside the grocery store. Possibly it was simply the smile I gave to the woman passing me in the grocery store, or letting the guy with 2 items go before me in line.

I don’t think one can measure kindness. Sometimes it’s a spontaneous natural reaction to something we see or someone in need. Sometimes it’s kindness just for the sake of doing what’s right. Sometime’s it’s just a sense that someone could use something positive in their day/life. Every act of kindness, no matter how small is the greatest act of kindness ever. In that moment, for the person receiving the kindness, it IS the greatest act.

So today, smile at someone, let someone go ahead of you in line, give the lady in front of you that extra $5 she’s short to get her food, help someone pump their gas, pay for a family’s meal at a restaurant anonymously, or something else. Pay attention and you’ll see plenty of opportunities. They are always there, all around us. Just reach out. YOU can make a change in someone’s day and in the world. The more of us who just pay attention and ACT when we see a need, the better the world where we all live will be.

If you send some kindness into the world today, come back and tell us about it in comments. I look forward to seeing all of your lights shine.
